{"id":28984,"date":"2025-04-11T20:14:38","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T00:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/jet-set-nightclub-collapse-structural-failures-ignored-signals-and-an-avoidable-tragedy\/"},"modified":"2025-04-11T20:16:21","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T00:16:21","slug":"jet-set-nightclub-collapse-structural-failures-ignored-signals-and-an-avoidable-tragedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/en\/jet-set-nightclub-collapse-structural-failures-ignored-signals-and-an-avoidable-tragedy\/","title":{"rendered":"Jet Set collapse: Structural failures, ignored signals and an avoidable tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the night of April 9, 2025, the collapse of the roof of the renowned Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo left at least 200 people dead and more than a hundred injured.<\/p>\n<p>As rescue efforts continue, infrastructure experts are beginning to delineate the possible causes of the disaster that has shocked the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Hispanic community.<\/p>\n<h2><!--more--><\/h2>\n<h2>Misuse of the structure<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28880\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28880\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28880\" src=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/colapso-jet-set-1.jpg\" alt=\"Jet Set \" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to structural evaluation specialists, the collapsed building, referring to the Jet Set discotheque, was originally designed to house a movie theater -El Portal-, with land use permits issued for that purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Engineer Cristian Rojas, former president of the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors<a href=\"https:\/\/www.codia.org.do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(CODIA<\/a>), warned that adapting this space to operate as a discotheque implied a drastic change in the dynamic and punctual loads of the building.<\/p>\n<p>The roofing system used, a double T-type prefabricated slab, was not designed to support heavy equipment such as air conditioners or power plants.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the use of inadequate waterproofing materials, such as low-quality sand, favored water seepage and the oxidation of structural rods, weakening the integrity of the roof.<\/p>\n<h2>Vibration, humidity and fire<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28883\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28883\" src=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/colapso-jet-set-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Envato<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>One of the most underestimated elements, according to Rojas, was the constant exposure to noise in the Jet Set.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sound in discotheques generates sustained vibrations that accelerate the deterioration of weakened concrete,&#8221;
