With Amy Winehouse\u2019s death fifteen years ago, the British music scene lost one of the most unique voices in its history and has tirelessly sought her successor, failing to realize that her true achievement was to shatter the industry\u2019s rules and pave the way for a new generation of female artists.<\/p>\n

The label of the \u201cnew Amy\u201d is a heavy burden that subsequent British female vocalists\u2014such as Adele, Raye, or, more recently, the promising young artist Sienna Spiro\u2014have had to bear and continue to bear. They all cite Winehouse as an inspiration for their music<\/a>, but\u2026 what do they have in common with the late singer, and how do they differ from her? <\/p>\n

Amy Jade Winehouse (1983\u20132011) was born in Enfield, north of London, into a Jewish family with ties to jazz, particularly through her father, Mitch, and her grandmother Cynthia, who dated saxophonist Ronnie Scott.<\/p>\n

Artists such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and The Ronettes provided the soundtrack to young Amy\u2019s childhood and would become her main influences when she first started out in music. She trained at the Sylvia Young School of Drama and later at the BRIT School, the great breeding ground for London talent, where, years later, Raye, Lola Young, and Jessie J, among others, would also study. <\/p>\n

Her career took off in 2003, after she signed her first record deal with the release of her debut album *Frank*\u2014named in honor of Sinatra* (2003)\u2014and would go on to include two more albums, *Back to Black* (2006) and *Lioness: Hidden Treasures* (2011), released months after her death.<\/p>\n

Amy’s vocal talent, combined with her signature look\u2014featuring a beehive hairstyle and dramatic eyeliner\u2014along with her heart-wrenching lyrics, catapulted her to worldwide success.<\/p>\n

Amy Winehouse: A Turbulent Love Affair, the Inspiration Behind Her Best Songs<\/b><\/h2>\n

Just as much as on stage, Amy\u2019s life unfolded in the pubs of Camden. That\u2019s where she would go to sing or pour pints behind the bar; and that\u2019s also where she met the love of her life, Blake Fielder-Civil, whom she would marry in 2007 and divorce two years later. <\/p>\n

Their tumultuous relationship, marked by infidelity, alcohol, and drugs, would serve as inspiration for the London-based singer\u2019s most successful songs, but it would also lead Amy to hit rock bottom, forcing her to grapple with eating disorders, addictions, and depression even as her fame continued to rise.<\/p>\n

Amy Winehouse’s voice fell silent forever on July 23, 2011, when she was found dead at the age of just 27 in her home in the London neighborhood of Camden. She left behind a brief but highly acclaimed career, with nearly thirty awards to her name, including six Grammy Awards and a BRIT Award. <\/p>\n

After her death, the music industry rushed to fill the void left by the \u201cLioness of Camden\u201d and found the perfect replacement in the prominent singer Adele. At one of her concerts in Boston (U.S.) in 2016, the singer of \u201cRolling in the Deep\u201d said, \u201cI owe 90 percent of my career to Amy. She\u2019s the reason I picked up a guitar, and she\u2019s the reason I write my songs.\u201d <\/p>\n

For her part, singer Raye addressed the (bitter) weight of stigma in her song \u201cI Will Overcome\u201d: \u201cIt\u2019s funny\u2014some people say I look like Amy. There are those who spit venom from their keyboards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to NME, the artist spoke out against media pressure: “The hard part is when people are so horrible and mean with their comments, saying, ‘You’ll never be her.’ It’s shocking the way they talk to me\u2014it’s the same cruelty that Amy experienced.”<\/p>\n

All eyes are now on the very young British singer Sienna Spiro, 20, who just released her debut album, *Visitor*, this July. The similarities to Winehouse are undeniable: in addition to their physical resemblance, she also comes from a Jewish family, has a retro style, and even wore a dress featuring Amy\u2019s image during her tour as a tribute. <\/p>\n
