Artist<\/a> David Archuleta promotes his book ‘Devout’, his memoir about how he went from living in a Mormon community to being one of the leading openly LGTBI+ Latino singers of the millennial generation in the United States after participating in ‘American Idol’.<\/p>\n

Archuleta, who on Sunday presents in Miami his text with the subtitle ‘Losing my faith to find myself’, which has entered the list of best sellers, says in an interview with EFE that his motivation to write it came after receiving messages from young religious who were going through the same thing.<\/p>\n

“A lot of people wrote to me saying, ‘How did you get to this point? What gave you the courage?’ Because they were saying, ‘I’m religious too and it’s very scary to think about doing what you just did,’ which was to come out publicly after being very religious,” recounts the singer, whose mother is Honduran.<\/p>\n

The Miami-born performer gained fame in 2008, when at the age of 17 he came in second place in the seventh season of ‘American Idol’ and released an album of the same name that reached second place in the U.S. sales chart.<\/p>\n

But three years later, despite his success, he paused his musical career to embark on a Mormon mission in South America, having grown up in Utah as part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.<\/p>\n

‘Devout’, which is also an EP with three songs, tells the story of the process the artist, who identifies himself as “queer”, went through when he came out in 2021 and abandoned his religion in 2023, after which he has achieved success with songs such as ‘Cr\u00e8me Brul\u00e9e’, with lyrics about homosexual love.<\/p>\n

“So maybe it will help someone find the courage as well, even if it’s not just to come out, but to learn how to overcome shame and be willing to make a life, life changes and life transitions, even when it seems kind of scary at first,” she details.<\/p>\n

In addition to the relationship between his religion and his sexuality, Archuleta addresses his Latino identity in his memoir, as his mother, salsa singer Guadalupe Mayorga, is from Honduras and taught him “the effort of coming to a new place when he immigrated here and started over.”<\/p>\n

“Some of those things, I realized, I needed to challenge because I felt that some of them were very established in the culture of machismo. And it was seeing the beauty of the culture and the need to challenge some things that shaped me. And I talk about it in the book,” she says.<\/p>\n

Archuleta has embraced “Latin flavor” and ‘Spanglish’, the way U.S.-born Hispanics combine both languages, which he shows in his collaboration with Colombia’s Esteman.<\/p>\n

For his upcoming releases, the singer has approached other Latin performers for more collaborations.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been writing more in Spanglish because that’s how I am. I’ve always grown up around Spanglish and I speak Spanglish. I spoke Spanglish with my mom. And that’s where I’m at, growing up in Miami and then growing up in Utah, it’s like having two cultures,” he says.<\/p>\n

Being LGTBI+ in 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n

Despite the challenges that remain, Archuleta believes that being LGTBI+ “is much easier than it has ever been” thanks, in part, to the representation and visibility of stories of sexual diversity.<\/p>\n

Even so, he emphasizes that one of the challenges is to avoid being pigeonholed and “show that LGBTI+ artists and creators can make music for everyone”.<\/p>\n

“I still make music for everyone to listen to and enjoy, whether they’re straight, queer, Latino. That’s my goal, to continue to make sure I’m not stuck in just a small category here. I want to be accessible to as many people as possible,” he mentions.<\/p>\n

Archuleta will present his book on April 26 at a Miami Beach hotel and then on May 4 in San Francisco, reported Agencia EFE, and the following day in Denver.<\/p>\n
