In a recent interview, the actor spoke candidly about his aspirations and about the figures who have marked his path in acting.<\/p>\n

Chalamet confessed that for years he deeply admired performers such as Joaquin Phoenix<\/span><\/span> y Heath Ledger<\/span><\/span>whom he considers true references. This latest film, directed by Josh Safdie<\/span><\/span>features Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a shrewd hustler and ping-pong player who moves in the New York<\/span><\/span> of the 1950s.<\/p>\n

To prepare for the character, the actor decided to get thoroughly involved in the performance, even insisting on wearing real glasses during filming, even though he didn’t need them. The effort seemed to pay off, as the performer was able to win the Golden Globe Awards<\/span><\/span> as Best Actor, beating out the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio<\/span><\/span> y Ethan Hawke<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

With this momentum, many analysts began to see him as one of the favorites to take home the statuette<\/a> at the Oscar Awards<\/span><\/span> scheduled for March 15.<\/p>\n

However, the race for the award could have been complicated after some statements that generated controversy. During a conversation organized by CNN<\/span><\/span> y Variety<\/span><\/span> with actor Matthew Matthew McConaughey<\/span><\/span>Chalamet spoke about the future of cinema and compared its situation with other artistic disciplines.<\/p>\n

The actor said he is concerned that cinema is losing relevance and mentioned that he would not be interested in working in areas such as opera or ballet, disciplines which, he said, many people feel should be kept alive even though they no longer arouse the same interest from the public.<\/p>\n

Although the comment was made in an apparently light tone, the actor’s words provoked criticism among professionals from both artistic sectors.<\/p>\n

The response from the ballet and opera world<\/h2>\n

Reactions were quick to follow from some of the world’s leading cultural institutions, including the Metropolitan Opera<\/span><\/span> of New York, the Paris Opera<\/span><\/span>Opera, the Royal Opera House<\/span><\/span> of London and the Teatro Real in Madrid<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Through social networks, several companies shared videos of applause at the end of their performances accompanied by the message “Yes it matters”, in defense of the cultural value of these performing arts.<\/p>\n

There were even humorous responses. The Seattle Opera<\/span><\/span> went so far as to offer a 14% discount on tickets using the promotional code “TIMOTHEE”.<\/p>\n

The actor’s words were also commented on in the program The View<\/span><\/span>where hosts Whoopi Goldberg Whoopi Goldberg<\/span><\/span> y Sunny Hostin<\/span><\/span> criticized the comment.<\/p>\n

Goldberg warned that criticizing other art forms can generate negative reactions, especially considering that Chalamet himself comes from a family linked to the world of dance.<\/p>\n

Even so, the actor also received support on social networks. Some users pointed out that his comment may have been misinterpreted and that his intention was probably to warn about the risk of cinema becoming inaccessible to the general public.<\/p>\n

Peer support and award questions<\/h2>\n

Among those who have shown solidarity with the actor are Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n<\/span><\/span>star of the film Emilia Perez<\/span><\/span>. The actress shared a meme on social networks in which she appears next to the character played by Chalamet in Marty Supreme<\/em>, as a way of supporting him.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, the voting process of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences<\/span><\/span> already took place between February 26 and March 5, a few days before the ceremony.<\/p>\n

This leaves open the question of whether or not the controversy will influence the final result. The only thing that is certain is that, amid praise and criticism, Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet remains one of the protagonists of the conversation prior to the big night at the movies.<\/p>\n
