New Yorkers and tourists will welcome the year 2026 in Times Square with a new ball, which was first unveiled to the media and later hoisted to the top of the building, where it will await to welcome the New Year at midnight on December 31.<\/p>\n

This is the ninth version of the famous ball-called this year ‘Constellation’-since the tradition began in 1907. It has 5,280 handmade round Waterford crystals, almost twice as many as the previous one, which were triangular-shaped crystals.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It is also the first to have round crystals and has almost twice as many lights as the ball it replaced.<\/p>\n

This new sphere, waiting for the arrival of the New Year, will begin its descent for the final 60 seconds from the 139-foot (42.36-meter) pole at the top of the 26-story One Times Square building, from where it has descended for more than a century.<\/p>\n

The new sphere coincides with the completion of the building’s $550 million renovation.<\/p>\n

On the 100th anniversary of the ball drop in 2007, the lights were replaced with LED technology, dramatically increasing the brightness and color range of the ball.<\/p>\n

The former will be displayed as part of an immersive art and culture exhibit at the Times Travel Museum, which will open in 2026 at One Time Square, which began as a communications building, Michael Phillips, president of Jamestown, the firm that owns the structure, said during the presentation.<\/p>\n

He referred to the fact that the building opened around the same time that the company headed by Guglielmo Marconi, the pioneer of wireless radio, moved to the site, which was also home to The New York Times.<\/a><\/p>\n

The tradition of greeting the year with a dial, which was the brainchild of then-New York Times owner Adolph Ochs, began with a metal and wood ball in 1907 and 100 lights and was inspired by a 19th century maritime tradition of dropping a ball at a specific time to help ships synchronize their watches.<\/p>\n

In the 1920s it was replaced by a lighter wrought iron model, in 1955 it was aluminum, and in the 1980s red lights and a green stem were added to look like an apple, in honor of New York’s nickname of “The Big Apple.”<\/p>\n

In 2000 the Waterford glass ‘Millennium Ball’ with 504 glass triangles, halogen lighting was introduced to welcome the new century and over the years it has been updated with modern lighting technologies.<\/p>\n

“We have the most digitally evolved lighting and sound sequence that’s associated with it. And the ball really, like the building, was built by New Yorkers with design, with ingenuity and with parts and pieces from all over the world and really represents what is local and great about our city, but also what the visitors who come here represent,” Phillips noted.<\/p>\n

This tradition<\/a> was only interrupted in 1942 and 1943 as a result of World War II.<\/p>\n

The arrival of the New Year welcomes thousands of people in this tourist area of New York who enjoy various shows during New Year’s Eve under a high security deployment that mobilizes thousands of police officers.<\/p>\n
