Tom Cruise raves about “Digger,” the film he stars in and which is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu

American actor Tom Cruise plays an eccentric oil tycoon in “Digger,” his first collaboration with Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu and the “most original and moving” film he has ever seen, he said Tuesday during the film’s world premiere in London.

The 64-year-old actor was the star of the event, which on Tuesday transformed London’s Leicester Square into a massive film set, featuring much of the main cast.

Cruise was the first to arrive on the red carpet, dressed in a tuxedo paired with cowboy-style boots, and spent nearly two hours talking with his fans before speaking with the press at the event, including EFE.

Cruise said that, since the beginning of his acting career, he has played a wide range of characters and genres, but nothing quite like his role in “Digger.”

“This is, without a doubt, the most original movie I’ve ever seen or read, and one of the most moving ones I’ve ever experienced,” the actor said.

Playing the role of tycoon Digger Rockwell, Cruise is unrecognizable, made to look older with prosthetics and delivering a comical—and crude—performance, a far cry from his usual action-hero roles.

For the actor, it is a “privilege” to have been able to bring such a character to the screen, as he says he is very selective when choosing his roles and is always looking to learn new skills and explore different areas of acting so he can later incorporate them into his films.

“If you look at technique—whether it’s flying planes, dance, or music—I’m constantly studying these things: architecture, art, history… you know, and I apply all of that to every movie, and sometimes it takes years,” Cruise reflected.

In fact, “Digger,” which will hit Spanish theaters on October 2, is the result of seven years of collaboration between Cruise and Iñárritu, whom he describes as a filmmaker “one of a kind.”

Digger stars Tom Cruise: Human power and ambition

The film is being released amidst enormous secrecy, and only minimal plot details have been revealed, as the Mexican filmmaker explained to EFE that it is a film made for people to see in the cinema and discover it.

“It’s really hard to say what it’s about without spoiling the experience,” said the Mexican.

Even so, he dares to suggest that “Digger” is about storytelling—about how power and human ambition are “something very scary and fun at the same time.”

In addition, it holds up a satirical and politically charged mirror to the audience, reflecting the current state of the world: “When we started, the world was very different… and reality caught up with us. That was the challenge,” said Iñárritu.

The filmmaker returns after a four-year hiatus since *Bardo* (2022) and is in excellent company.

In addition to Cruise, the cast includes German actress Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, and Michael Stuhlbarg, among others.

Hüller, who is currently enjoying one of the best moments of his career, told EFE that he agreed to join “Digger” because he “admired” the Mexican filmmaker’s work.

“I met him, and we had a wonderful conversation. I felt he was someone I could trust and someone I wanted to be around. He has great vision and all the tools to make a good movie. So I wanted to find out how he worked.”

The world premiere of “Digger” took place as part of the so-called “Royal Film Performance,” a charity event sponsored by the British royal family, and was attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Catherine, according to Agencia EFE.
