Singer Taylor Swift released a 13-second preview of the music video for her new single “Patient Zero” on Thursday; the full video will premiere on Sunday, September 27, at the MTV Video Music Awards, while the single will be heard for the first time this Friday.
The music video stars Swift alongside actors Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell and features Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.
With a highly cinematic, dark, and romantic aesthetic, the video features images of Swift washing her hands, two bodies submerging in water, a black rose, two women standing next to a grave, Swift with tears in her eyes, and the actors’ names appearing in the credits.
Taylor Swift announced on Tuesday that she will release her new single on September 25, titled “Patient Zero,” as part of the expanded edition of “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,” which includes four previously unreleased tracks.
The singer will return for a deluxe edition of her latest album
“I’ve been eagerly waiting to tell you that my new single, ‘Patient Zero,’ will be released on September 25 (!!!!!!!!!!!!),” the singer shared on Instagram, along with a photo of herself wearing a black dress and leaning against a wall.
The singer also explained that the new songs were written during a trip to Sweden, where she was celebrating with her collaborators Max Martin and Shellback the fact that her album had had the best debut in history for an album.
On September 27, Swift, 36, will premiere the music video for her new single “Patient Zero” during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), where she will receive the inaugural award for Best Art Direction.
Swift is also the artist with the second-most nominations of the night—nine in total—including Best Direction, Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Best Pop, according to Agencia EFE.
