‘El yerno’, the new political satire by Mexican filmmaker Gerardo Naranjo, known for his work in productions such as ‘Narcos’ or ‘Miss Bala’, will premiere on May 1 on Netflix, according to the platform.

The feature film, starring Adrián Vázquez, is written and produced by the American James Schamus, a team joined by the Fabula production house of brothers Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, both of whom are leaders in the Chilean film industry.

According to the streaming platform, Vázquez will play José Sánchez, a fictional character who after a bad run in business will take the form of a feared political operator known as El Serpiente.

From the ups and downs of the protagonist’s voice, the story will show the tragic and at the same time comic contradiction of the «great Mexican dream», which consists of «wanting to succeed at any cost».

«El yerno’ explores betrayal as a generalized practice in this country as a narrative line. The film is a provocation to analyze an equally ridiculous and contradictory reality,» Naranjo told Netflix.

Schamus, for his part, emphasized his desire to return to Mexico, after having participated in the miniseries ‘Somos’ in 2021 along with Mexican writer Fernanda Melchor.

«Ever since we finished ‘Somos’, I have dreamed of returning to Mexico, hoping to be able to experience that same energy, talent and warmth again. With ‘El yerno’, that dream came true,» said Schamus, who is part of the screenwriting team that also includes Gabriel Nuncio and Alexandro Aldrete.

The screenwriter described the film as an «absurd and unhinged» adventure that will be translated into a tragicomedy.

«It’s a new adventure and an even bigger explosion of Mexican creativity. So, even if the ‘great Mexican dream’ of our characters turns into a rather absurd and deranged tragicomedy, for me it has been a simple and wonderful dream,» he stressed.

The cast also includes Jero Medina (‘Me late que sí’), Verónica Bravo (‘Backdoor’) and playwright David Gaitán, among other Mexican performers, reported Agencia EFE.
