MLB History! Twins Fulfill a Dream and Umpire Together for the First Time

Baseball witnessed an unprecedented scene at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Identical twins Austin and Tyler Jones shared a Major League Baseball field for the first time as umpires, making the doubleheader between the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, a historic day.

In the first game, Austin was assigned to first base, while Tyler worked second base. Both played again in the second game of the day. Baltimore won both games by the identical score of 4-2.
What makes their story even more special is that they became the first identical twins to officiate together in an MLB game. They were already the fourth pair of brothers to reach the major leagues as umpires, but never before had identical twins shared the field in this way.

From Little League to Making History in MLB

The Jones family’s journey began long before they arrived at Camden Yards.

Originally from Summerville, South Carolina, they began refereeing when they were around 15 years old.

After learning that his local league was in desperate need of umpires.

The brothers, who are passionate about baseball, accepted the challenge and ended up working in all four divisions of their Little League.

They also played at Fort Dorchester High School and later began their professional careers as umpires.

In 2014, they played together in the Gulf Coast League, but their careers subsequently took different paths.

More than a decade passed before they faced each other again on the field in a professional game.

Austin was the first to make it to the majors.

He made his debut on July 22, 2024, and pitched in 35 MLB games that season.

Tyler got his chance on May 4, 2025, when he was called up to cover a doubleheader between the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets at Busch Stadium.

For Tyler, that debut also had a special twist:

He had to drive from Columbus, Ohio, to St. Louis after receiving the call he had been waiting for for years.

Austin was one of the first people he spoke with during the trip (Filed under: MLB umpire twins make history together).

An unexpected coincidence made the dream come true

Interestingly, the historic 2026 reunion came about thanks to the calendar and the weather.

Tyler had worked the first game of the series between Toronto and Baltimore.

The next game was postponed due to rain, forcing the scheduling of a doubleheader for Wednesday.

That change allowed Austin to travel to Baltimore and join the umpiring crew alongside his brother.

“This is something we’ve always dreamed of,” Tyler acknowledged, recalling that MLB had tried to set up a matchup between them before, but their schedules hadn’t allowed it.

Both players also posted very similar stats behind the plate in 2026.

Data from Ump Scorecards released this week show Austin with 94.4% accuracy and 94.2% consistency.

Meanwhile, Tyler recorded 94.5% and 94.8%, respectively.
