Mexico vs. Colombia: Rafa Márquez Makes His Debut Against the Opponent That Became El Tri’s Nightmare

The Mexican National Team is officially embarking on a new chapter. Following its participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, El Tri returns to the field this Saturday, September 26, to face Colombia in Baltimore in Rafael Márquez’s first match as national team coach. The Mexican Football Federation confirms that the match is part of the preseason tour that kicks off the team’s journey toward 2030.

The opener won’t be easy. Colombia has become one of the opponents that has caused Mexico the most trouble in recent years and is coming off a streak of four consecutive wins over El Tri. The five most recent matchups ended as follows: Mexico 0-4 Colombia (2025), Mexico 2-3 Colombia (2023), Mexico 2-3 Colombia (2022), Mexico 0-2 Colombia (2012), and Mexico 1-0 Colombia (2010). In other words, Mexico’s last victory over Colombia came 16 years ago.

The most significant previous match took place on October 11, 2025, when Colombia routed Mexico 4-0 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Jhon Lucumí, Luis Díaz, Jefferson Lerma, and Johan Carbonero scored the goals in that crushing defeat for the team then coached by Javier Aguirre.

A compilation published prior to the 2025 match listed 28 encounters, with 10 Mexican wins, nine ties, and nine Colombian wins.

Following the 0-4 result in 2025, that series would be tied in wins under that criterion.

Colombia is also entering a new phase following the World Cup.

On September 15, James Rodríguez announced his retirement from the national team, bringing to a close an international career that spanned 131 games.

FIFA notes that he finished his career as Colombia’s all-time leader in appearances and assists (Filed under: Mexico vs. Colombia: Schedule and History).
