Messi’s Stunner Not Enough: Columbus Crew Defeats Inter Miami Ahead of His Farewell with Argentina

The Columbus Crew secured a thrilling 2-1 victory this Sunday against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami—in the final match before his farewell with the Argentine national team—with a 99th-minute goal by Jamal Thiaré.

Venezuelan Josef Martínez broke the tie in the 28th minute with a shot across the goal from the penalty spot, just minutes after Inter Miami protested for a possible penalty kick in their favor.

Coach Cristian “Kily” González’s team tied the game shortly afterward, in the 33rd minute, when Messi sent a direct free kick from the right wing into the back of the net, catching the goalkeeper off guard at the far post.

The Florida team struggled against the Crew’s pressure and lost in stoppage time of the second half.

This came after Santiago Morales was sent off for receiving two yellow cards within three minutes.

In the 99th minute, goalkeeper Roco Ríos failed to hold onto a shot by Spain’s Brais Méndez, and on the rebound, Jamal Thiaré scored the decisive goal to make it 2-1.

Inter Miami has now gone five games without a win in the MLS, with four draws and one loss.

Despite that, they remain in second place in the East with 46 points, 14 points behind the leader, Nashville.

Messi remained with Inter Miami before traveling to Argentina for his farewell with the Albiceleste, scheduled for November 6 in a friendly against Benin (Filed under: Lionel Messi scores but Miami loses).
