Mary Poppins is coming back as a TV series

A series adapting the eight “Mary Poppins” books by P.L. Travers is in development, with Tom Winchester (“Shogun”) serving as producer and showrunner (creative lead) for Pure Fiction Television, according to the website Deadline.
The series aims to explore the world of *The Nanny* in greater depth than the 1964 Disney film version, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

In P.L. Travers’ novels, Mary Poppins is not the sweet character portrayed by Andrews. She is stricter, more vain, and more severe. Furthermore, the adventures in the books are more surreal, mysterious, and dark.
According to Deadline, Disney is not involved in the project at this time, but discussions are underway to see if the company is interested in joining.
However, approval from the media conglomerate is not necessary to move forward with the project, since Winchester is working directly with the trustees of P.L. Travers’ estate.
At the time, Travers openly criticized Disney’s adaptation of her work in the film starring Andrews.

In 2013, Disney released “Saving Mr. Banks,” a film starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson that depicted the tense negotiations between the author and Walt Disney to bring “Mary Poppins” to the big screen.
Disney also released a sequel to the film in 2018 titled “Mary Poppins Returns,” which starred Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda and was directed by Rob Marshall, according to Agencia EFE.
