Lakers Break Their Silence on LeBron James’ Departure: “It Was Amicable”

Los Angeles Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka said Thursday that LeBron James’ departure from the franchise this summer was “amicable” and expressed his gratitude for the time the player spent with the team.

“I’m very grateful for the relationship we had, which lasted until this summer, when the decision was made for him to play for another team. It was handled in a friendly, professional, and gracious manner,” Pelinka said at a press conference.

After eight seasons in Los Angeles, where he won a championship in 2020, James, 41, signed with the Philadelphia 76ers this summer for the next two seasons.

“We are grateful for the LeBron era.”

“Our communications with him this summer were conducted in a diplomatic, professional, and honest manner,” Pelinka added.

“We viewed all of this with gratitude, because it has been an incredible time for us here,” the executive insisted.

On July 24, James announced his decision to sign with the 76ers after admitting that, at the end of last season, he had even considered retiring.

“This is my final decision. I’m not doing this for the money. I’m not doing this for my family.”

“Why am I still playing at this point? I still want to give it my all. I still want to work hard. I still want to give it my best.”

“I still want to compete and have the chance to feel what it’s like to win again,” James said at the time (Filed under: LeBron James left the Lakers on good terms).

LeBron James has built one of the most successful careers in the NBA.

He is the all-time leading scorer in the regular season and has won four championships:

Two with the Miami Heat, one with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and another with the Los Angeles Lakers.

In addition, he was named Season MVP four times and Finals MVP four times.

James also set longevity records, earned multiple All-Star selections, and became the first player to score more than 40,000 points.

His 2016 championship with Cleveland was particularly notable for coming back from a 3-1 deficit against Golden State (Filed under: LeBron James left the Lakers on good terms).
