Isaac del Toro Sets His Sights on Los Angeles 2028: The Olympic Dream That Has Mexico Excited

Isaac del Toro has a new major goal on the horizon. As he continues to establish himself among the elite of international cycling, the Mexican has already expressed his intention to compete for a spot to represent Mexico at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, although he will first have to go through the corresponding qualification process. This possibility was confirmed by Rommel Pacheco, director general of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE), who explained that the cyclist is ready to participate in the qualifying process for LA28.

Del Toro has not yet secured an Olympic spot. Qualification will depend on the established process for road cycling, so his desire to compete in Los Angeles must first result in a spot for Mexico and then in his selection to join the national team. This plan aligns with the new Olympic cycle that officially began for Mexican sports in 2026. CONADE itself has noted that one of its major goals leading up to Los Angeles is to increase the number of qualified athletes and strengthen training in disciplines with the potential to achieve outstanding results.

Before turning his full attention to the Olympic Games, Isaac Del Toro faces an immediate challenge:

The 2026 UCI Road World Championships, to be held in Montreal, Canada, from September 20 to 27.

The Mexican has already delivered an outstanding performance in the men’s elite individual time trial.

He finished in sixth place with a time of 46:31.96, 1:38.83 behind the Belgian Remco Evenepoel, the race winner.

Now, Del Toro will compete in the men’s elite road race on Sunday, September 27, where he will attempt to improve on the seventh-place finish he achieved at the 2025 World Championships.

The UCI is keeping that race on the official schedule, which will conclude the Montreal championship.

His current form explains the anticipation:

Isaac Del Toro is currently ranked third in the UCI Men’s Individual Road World Rankings, behind only Tadej Pogačar and Remco Evenepoel.

A potential appearance by Isaac Del Toro at the 2028 Los Angeles Games would be particularly significant because Mexico has never won an Olympic medal in road cycling.

Pacheco highlighted the Baja California native’s commitment to representing the country and noted that he must follow the appropriate procedures.

The official himself had noted as early as 2025 that Del Toro has CONADE’s support leading up to the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

For now, the Olympic goal remains an aspiration rather than a confirmed qualification.

The next step is much closer:

Montreal 2026, where Isaac Del Toro will have another chance this Sunday to make history for Mexican cycling.
