Cowboys vs. Ravens Still On: NFL Responds to Controversy Over Maracanã’s Turf
Por Carlos Rodríguez ·
The historic Cowboys vs. Ravens game in Rio de Janeiro remains on as planned despite concerns raised about the condition of the Maracanã’s turf. The NFL assures that the field will be ready to host one of the most anticipated international games of the 2026 season on Sunday, September 27.
The league has officially scheduled the game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Dallas Cowboys for 4:25 p.m. ET / 3:25 p.m. CT / 2:25 p.m. MT / 1:25 p.m. PT, as part of Week 3. It will be the first NFL regular-season game held in Rio de Janeiro.
NFL Addresses the Turf at Maracanã
The condition of the field became a topic of discussion following criticism from soccer players who regularly use the stadium.
Flamengo players Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Agustín Rossi publicly criticized the condition of the field.
The deterioration has been attributed to heavy use of the building and recent rains in Rio.
However, the NFL’s stance is clear.
Nick Pappas, the league’s director of fields, stated on September 21 that there are no concerns at this time and ruled out any discussion of moving the game.
The NFL has monitored field conditions and taken preventive measures to support the stadium during preparations.
The Ravens also reported that their travel plans remain unchanged (Filed under: Cowboys vs. Ravens).
Maracanã Is Getting Ready for the NFL
Preparing for the game poses a special challenge because the stadium is used to hosting soccer matches and now must adapt to the demands of an NFL game.
The game between the Cowboys and the Ravens will also expand the league’s presence in Brazil.
After holding games in São Paulo in 2024 and 2025, the NFL will bring its regular season to Rio de Janeiro for the first time.
The league itself organized a week of activities in the city from September 20 to 27, featuring fan experiences, entertainment, official merchandise stores, and other events surrounding the NFL Rio Game.
