A Rough Week in the NFL: Three Key Quarterbacks Go Down with Injuries, Setting Off Alarm Bells

The second week of the NFL season proved brutal for three young quarterbacks who were expected to take a big step forward this season. Caleb Williams (Chicago Bears), Jayden Daniels (Washington Commanders), and Jaxson Dart (New York Giants) were sidelined from their respective Week 2 games due to injuries that appeared to be serious.

Williams suffered a non-contact injury during the Bears’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings and was taken off the field on a medical cart while medical staff closely examined his right leg. Daniels dislocated his left elbow (his non-throwing arm) in the loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Finally, in Monday night’s game, Dart suffered what looked like a brutal knee injury after being hit by two defenders from Los Angeles Rams while his team was losing in Los Angeles. Dart’s injury, in particular, could end up being the most concerning. Three young stars, three injuries that could have huge repercussions on the NFL season. Here’s what we know about their current status.

Caleb Williams

The Bears’ quarterback might, in fact, be in the best position of the three injured players.

This is despite the fact that his injury seemed to be the most serious at the time it occurred.

Toward the end of the Bears’ dismal offensive performance against the Vikings at a rain-soaked Soldier Field, Williams was trying to score the first *touchdown* of the game in the fourth quarter.

On a first-down play that resulted in a touchdown from the 6-yard line, Williams faked a handoff and cut to his left.

As he signaled to a receiver in the end zone and dodged a Vikings defender who was charging toward him, Williams suddenly fell to the ground.

He slipped on the wet grass and began screaming in pain as he rolled around.

The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner was eventually wheeled off the field on a medical cart with a towel over his head, raising his fist toward the crowd.

The immediate reaction from the Bears’ loyal fans was one of concern at the possibility that their quarterback might be sidelined for an extended period.

On Monday, head coach Ben Johnson said that Williams appears to have avoided the worst-case scenario.

Mike Florio, an NFL analyst for NBC, said before Sunday night’s game that he had received information indicating that Williams had suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain, the mildest level of this type of injury.

Johnson said Monday that the quarterback’s situation will be evaluated on a week-by-week basis.

His participation in Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles has not been ruled out (Filed under: NFL—Three Quarterbacks Suffer Serious Injuries).

Jayden Daniels

The Commanders’ star quarterback doesn’t seem to have had the same luck.

On Sunday, Daniels caught the ball near the Cowboys’ end zone and stumbled, extending his left arm to break his fall.

When he hit the ground, his elbow gave way, and Daniels was left lying on the field in severe pain.

After the game, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that Daniels had dislocated his elbow and that X-rays ruled out any fractures.

“I felt really discouraged by him. I know everything he’s been through to get here,” Quinn said.

“He’s in good spirits tonight. We all wanted to play our best for him at that moment. Seeing him in that situation was tough on the team.”

“Even so, I think Marcus (Mariota) did a great job coming in when we regained possession and started moving the ball right away… it was a tough situation.”

This is a particularly difficult time for Daniels after an injury-plagued 2025 season.

In which he missed several games after dislocating the same elbow in a game against the Seattle Seahawks.

He returned to play against the Vikings, but aggravated the injury again, forcing him to miss the rest of the season (Filed under: NFL—Three Quarterbacks Suffer Serious Injuries).

The New York Giants were eagerly looking forward to a new season under head coach John Harbaugh—a name synonymous with success in the NFL.

And Dart was expected to be a key player in their resurgence. Now, all of that is up in the air.

As Dart stepped back to throw a pass during the opening drive of Monday’s game, he was hit in the *backfield* by two Rams *pass rushers* who were converging on him.

In a spectacular-looking collision, one of the Rams’ players—Josaiah Stewart—crashed into the lower half of Dart’s body.

The blow caused his left knee to bend sideways—a direction in which, to put it mildly, knees are not supposed to bend.

Dart fell quickly and showed obvious signs of pain, although he managed to leave the field on his own.

After the game, Harbaugh commented that the fact that Dart was able to walk off the field—and later returned to the sidelines in street clothes—suggested that the worst-case scenarios had been avoided.

“The fact that it didn’t turn out the way you’re talking about—that devastating outcome—is very good news,” Harbaugh said.

He added that more imaging tests would be performed on Dart’s knee on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that the *quarterback* is suspected of having suffered a sprain of the medial collateral ligament (MCL), which would likely cause him to miss several games.

Harbaugh did not confirm whether the team had anticipated Dart’s absence for the Week 3 game.

He simply said he was waiting for the results of further tests before making a decision (Filed under: Three NFL quarterbacks suffer serious injuries).
