The Mexican national team’s World Cup dream has come to an end. England defeated the Tricolor 3-2 in an intense match played at Azteca Stadium and secured its spot in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where it will now face Norway for a spot among the tournament’s top four teams.

In front of a packed stadium and fans who cheered nonstop throughout the 90 minutes, the team coached by Javier Aguirre fought until the very end, but was unable to overcome the lead the English team had built before halftime.

The standout player of the match was Jude Bellingham.

The Real Madrid midfielder made two appearances just two minutes apart, completely turning the game around.

He opened the scoring in the 36th minute, and shortly thereafter, in the 38th minute, he struck again to extend England’s lead and silence the Azteca Stadium for a few moments.

Just when it looked like the first half would end with England holding a comfortable lead, Mexico struck back quickly.

Julián Quiñones pulled the Tricolor within one goal in the 42nd minute with a goal that restored hope among the fans and allowed the Mexican team to head into halftime with a real chance of mounting a comeback in the second half.

However, England struck again at just the right moment.

In the 60th minute, Harry Kane converted a penalty to make it 3-1, widening the lead once again and forcing Mexico to take greater risks on offense.

The Mexican National Team never gave up

Spurred on by the support of its fans, El Tri sought to cut the deficit and was awarded another chance from the penalty spot.

Raúl Jiménez calmly converted the penalty kick in the 69th minute to make the score 3-2 and reignite the fans’ hopes.

In the final minutes, the Mexican team applied constant pressure in search of the equalizer that would send the game into overtime.

England, however, managed to hold onto its lead with solid defense and experience to secure a spot in the next round.

They’re playing against Norway

With this result, the team coached by Thomas Tuchel advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face Norway on July 11 in Miami.

The Norwegians are coming into the match with high morale after pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the World Cup by eliminating Brazil, thanks to a two-goal performance by Erling Haaland and an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

For Mexico, the elimination marks the end of a 2026 FIFA World Cup played partly on home soil, where fans turned out in full force for every match and made Azteca Stadium one of the venues with the best atmosphere in the tournament.

Although the result left a bitter taste for millions of fans, the Tricolor showed resilience and fought until the very last minute against one of the favorites to win the championship.
