The 2026 World Cup saw one of its biggest surprises so far. Norway eliminated Brazil with a 2-1 victory in the Round of 16 thanks to a brilliant performance by Erling Haaland and goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, who were instrumental in ending the Canarinha’s dream and propelling the Scandinavians into the tournament’s top eight.

At MetLife Stadium, packed with Brazilian fans, the team coached by Ståle Solbakken proved once again that its outstanding season has been no fluke. While Haaland delivered the decisive goals, Nyland put in a memorable performance in goal, including a saved penalty that ultimately set the tone for the match.

Brazil had its first big chance to take the lead in the first half. Bruno Guimarães stepped up to take a penalty kick that looked set to change the course of the game, but Nyland guessed the direction of the shot and kept the score tied, sparking jubilation among the Norwegian fans.

The Brazilian team constantly pressed forward toward the opponent’s goal with players such as Vinícius Júnior, Matheus Cunha, and Gabriel Martinelli, who was the biggest surprise in the starting lineup after replacing the injured Lucas Paquetá. However, their lack of finishing ultimately took its toll.

The Norwegian team’s tenacity paid off in the final stretch.

Erling Haaland stepped up in the 79th minute to break the tie and silence the Brazilian fans with a shot that confirmed why he is considered one of the deadliest strikers in the world. As Brazil desperately tried to mount a comeback, the Manchester City forward struck again in the 90th minute to complete his brace and extend the lead.

With those two goals, Haaland continues to establish himself as one of the standout players of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and confirms his excellent form with the Norwegian national team.

Brazil still managed to find one last chance to pull one back in stoppage time. Neymar converted a penalty in the 100th minute to make it 2-1, but the goal only served to make the result look a little better, as the final whistle blew shortly afterward, sealing one of the most unexpected eliminations of the tournament.

Goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland was also the star of the show. In addition to stopping Bruno Guimarães’ penalty kick, he made several decisive saves that kept Norway in the game during Brazil’s most intense periods of pressure.

With this result, Norway advances to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, where it will face the winner of the match between Mexico and England.

Meanwhile, Brazil is bowing out of the tournament early—an unexpected outcome for a team that entered the tournament as one of the favorites to win the title but failed to convert its dominance into goals against an opponent that capitalized on every opportunity.
