Colombian singer Shakira announced Friday that the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, of which she is a partner, will donate $500,000 to help children in Venezuela following the two earthquakes that struck the country.

“I am proud to share that FIFA’s Global Citizen Education Fund will allocate $500,000 to support organizations in Venezuela that are helping children whose education has been disrupted by this terrible tragedy,” the artist said in English in a video posted on Instagram.

The singer invited local organizations to apply for funding to help affected students and teachers return to school and thus restore access to education.

Shakira reported that several officials have already “stepped forward” in this campaign, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

He also called on Portugal’s Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro; France’s President, Emmanuel Macron; and Germany’s Foreign Minister, Friedrich Merz, to commit to “unlocking the necessary resources to support children’s education during Venezuela’s recovery.”

“If you believe that all children deserve the chance to dream, join this effort,” Shakira concluded, inviting her followers to donate to the campaign.

Last week, Venezuela was struck by two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, which have so far left 2,595 dead and 12,400 injured, prompting hundreds of people to rally to collect donations to help the affected population, according to Agencia EFE.
