The capital of the State of Mexico did not sleep last Saturday night. In a final that had drama, sweat and a movie-like outcome, the Diablos Rojos del Toluca were crowned champions of the Concacaf Champions Cup 2026.

After an agonizing tie in extra time, goalkeeper Luis García played the role of national hero by saving two penalties to seal the final 6-5 and give the “Chorrillero” their third title in this competition. Here is how Toluca became the Concachampions champion.

The match was a pure tactical war.

During the 90 minutes, the guest of honor refused to show up, thanks in part to Nahuel Guzmán, who flew to keep out Helinho’s lobbed shot, and to André-Pierre Gignac, who, incredibly, missed a clear option two meters from goal.

It was in overtime that the “Inferno” exploded.

In the 104th minute, Jorge Díaz sent the ball into the back of the net after a dry shot inside the box.

It looked as if the trophy was already in the bag, but UANL Tigres pulled out all the stops at 114′, when Brazilian Joaquim connected with a lethal header that sent everything to the lottery of penalties.

In the shootout, the tension was palpable at Toluca’s 2,600-meter-high altitude.

While the likes of Sebastián Córdova and Gignac himself fulfilled their quota, the figure of Luis García grew under the three posts.

The Scarlets’ goalkeeper stopped shots from Fernando Gorriarán and Juan Purata, allowing Fernando Arce to score the winning goal.

With this victory, Antonio “Turco” Mohamed adds one more trophy to his trophy cabinet and Toluca secures its place in the regional elite, making it clear that this team is designed for the big events.
